What to Keep & What to Toss

Start with a few difficult decisions. Be honest with yourself during this process and don't hang on to anything you have used or didn't even know you had. The less you pack, the less expensive the Kansas City movers will be.

  1. Sort your belongings into two categories, the what to keep and what to toss category. Be mindful of where you're moving to or from. What are the winters or summers like at your new home, and what clothes will you need to keep?

  2. Toss, donate, or sell everything else.

    Create a Packing Schedule

Try as hard as you can to stick to this schedule to avoid that rushed panicked feeling as moving day approaches.

  3. Take the time to create a packing schedule.

  4. Start with dismantling the furniture that you don't need to use every day.

  5. Pack non-essentials into moving boxes as soon as possible.

  6. Focus on packing categories at first and then rooms.

    Moving Binder

You moving binder and packing checklist should be kept together if it possible!

  7. Get all your important documents in one place.

  8. Keep important documents like birth certificates, Social Security Cards and taxes all in one, safe place.

  9. Use your moving binder to start transferring important utilities over before the Kansas City movers arrive.

    Purchase Packing Supplies

  10. Visit any of your local Kansas moving companies and purchase packing supplies you may need.

  11. Look for moving boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap and moving blankets

  12. Measure all your furniture and appliances to ensure they will fit in your new home and determine if you'll need a moving dolly for the large furniture.

    Pictures

  13. Take lots of pictures of your electronics at your old place so you can ensure you set them up correctly at your new place.

  14. Take pictures of your new place before you move in, to chronicle any damages (this is especially important to get your deposit retuned if you are renting).

  15. Take picture of your old house right before you leave to ensure that any damages are chronicled and categorized for future reference.

    Pack an Overnight Bag

  16. Pack a bag with all day to day essentials you'll need for the first few nights at your new place.

  17. For this packing checklist item, be sure to include a few changes of clothes, toiletries and chargers for your electronics.
