History of Platte Woods

Developed by “Ernie” C. Thompson as the “Garden Spot of Platte County,” in the 1930s, Platte Woods was originally an “exclusive residential community offering full acre or larger lots.” The land of Platte Woods used to be located just south of Military Road, (now known as Barry Road) that ran between the Liberty Arsenal and Fort Leavenworth. That parcel of land was later developed into the city we are familiar with today.

Ernie Thompson began building homes in the 1930s. They were designed to reflect the personality of a “classical suburban look” to make them unique compared to the typical American residences at the time.

Natural gas lines were introduced in 1951 and then residents abandoned their water wells in 1952 after the installation of water lines. Over a decade later in 1975, Platte Woods approved the insurance bonds to construct a sewer system. These lines were connected to the Kansas City sewer system, allowing residents to get rid of their septic tanks.

Today though, there is still plenty of plans in the works to promote growth in Platte Woods and draw more residents to our town.
