Granite vs. Quartz Countertops

If you are moving to Corpus Christi and are choosing between remodeling your kitchen counter-tops with either granite or quartz, All My Sons of Corpus Christi has everything you need to know about granite and quartz counter-tops.

When choosing between granite and quartz, you should know that only granite is 100% natural. Quartz is 93% natural and 7% color pigments and polymer resin, the resin being what binds the particles together.

If you are trying to figure out if granite or quartz is cheaper, stop. The reality is that granite and quartz are roughly the same price. If you are looking to save money then you are looking at the wrong materials and should look into laminate counter-tops instead. Granite typically runs about $60 per square foot, while quartz runs anywhere from $67 to $93 per square foot. Both granite and quartz are sourced overseas so their costs fluctuate with petroleum prices, related to container-shipping.

When choosing from either granite or quartz you should also be aware of the presence of radon. Radon is a radioactive gas that can cause lung cancer. Not only should you get any new home you buy checked for radon presence, you should take note that granite and quartz counter-tops have been linked to it as well. The amount of radon found in granite is slightly lower than that found in quartz.

When it comes to maintaining your granite or quartz counter-tops, granite will require more upkeep. Granite should be sealed upon installation and then on a regular basis there on out.

If you are looking for durability, quartz should be your counter-top of choice. Because quartz contains resins that help seal it together and is partially engineered, it does not contain striations or stain as much. Since granite is purely natural, it can crack or show imperfections. Granite also will not hold up against red wine.

Which material makes the best counter-top: quartz. Quartz is designed to be more durable, last longer, and requires less maintenance. However, if you love the look of granite and do not use your kitchen often, you can opt for the all-natural material.
