Best Neighborhoods to Go Trick-or-Treat in Austin, TX

Halloween is just around the corner and you know what that means – tis the season for trick-or-treating! Once the sun sets on October 31st, kids dressed up as their favorite characters or monsters come out of their homes and prowl the streets for candy. While adults can get in on the fun, especially with adults-only Halloween parties, trick-or-treating is pretty much reserved for the kids. To give your little monsters the best All Saints’ Eve experience, you’ve got to choose the right neighborhood. Here are some of the best neighborhoods for trick-or-treating in Austin.

What Makes a Neighborhood a Trick-or-Treating Spot?

There are a few characteristics that make a neighborhood an ideal candy-hunting spot for both little trick-or-treaters and the adults that are supervising them. While trick-or-treating in your own neighborhood is typically the easiest choice, it might not always be possible. If that’s the case for you, look for neighborhoods that have the following qualities.

Not A Lot of Walking

A walkable neighborhood is the best type of neighborhood for trick-or-treating. Walking is always going to be involved, but it’s best to avoid so much walking, especially for kids with shorter legs. Prevent blisters and grumpy kids by finding a neighborhood with plenty of houses that’s aren’t spaced so far apart. Plus, a higher housing density doesn’t only mean less walking, but also more candy.

Safe Streets

Safety should be a top priority when planning your trick-or-treating adventures. The last thing you want is to deal with busy traffic and dark streets, especially with small children in tow. Look for a well-lit neighborhood with wide sidewalks and quiet streets. A family-friendly neighborhood will likely have crosswalks, traffic guards, and maybe even a few security officers to keep everyone safe.

Decorations

Nothing gets you in the Halloween spirit like homes decked out in Halloween decorations. Strategically placed jack o’ lanterns and cobwebs to fake graveyards and animatronic zombies, you want to find a neighborhood where the residents go full out. Not only does it enhance the experience, it’s also a good indicator of how inviting residents are of trick-or-treaters.

Plenty of Candy

While candy may not be your top priority as an adult, candy may be the most important thing about Halloween for kids. Almost nothing gets young candy hunters more excited than the chance to satisfy their sweet tooth. While it’s recommended to set limits on how much candy kids can eat in one night, you’ll want them to collect at least one bucket full. Trick-or-treating in higher income neighborhoods usually results in a bigger candy haul in a shorter amount of time.
