The beautiful town of Isle of Wight got its name from the Isle of Wight off the mainland of England. In 1608, Captain John Smith crossed the James River, where he received 14 bushels of corn from the Warrosquyoack tribe. Nineteen years later, as part of their revenge for the Great Massacre of 1622, the English colonists drove the Warrosquyoack tribe from their villages. Later, Puritan colonists began to establish the first English Plantations along the south shore, where the present-day Isle of Wight now stands. By 1634, the Virginia Colony consisted of eight shires and had a population of about 5,000 people. In the 17th Century, St. Luke's Church was built and is now Virginia's oldest church building. It even became a National Historic Landmark in the 20th century.
There are many outdoor attractions to explore, such as Windsor Castle Park, St. Luke's Historic Church & Museum, and Chippokes Plantation State Park. Another historical site is the Chippokes Plantation, one of the oldest plantations in the U.S. that are still in use today. Fort Boykin is also a great place to discover if you enjoy visiting historical landmarks. Located on the James River, colonists created this to protect them from the Native American and Spanish attacks.
